Feminine Hygiene Project

Typically in the African culture, when a girl begins puberty and begins menstruation, she leaves school. This would be when she would seek a husband for protection and financial stability for the future. The families expect that having a child is a women’s purpose and education is therefore redundant.

We are working with volunteers in our Pendo community, who are educating girls and boys about the misconceptions of what happens during puberty, and encouraging girls to stay in school.

The simplest way of doing this is providing reusable sanitary pads and running workshops, teaching girls how to make them. This is also environmentally sustainable.

“Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, but teach him to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.  If you teach a woman to fish, she’ll feed a whole village.”
