AIDS Orphans/Mentoring Program
40% of the population of Tanzania are orphans under the age of 18 who lost parents to AIDS. An entire generation has been decimated to this catastrophic disease. As a result, many children are forced to live on the streets which makes them incredibly vulnerable to exploitation which often leads to prostitution for survival. In some cases, elderly grandmothers are left to care for infant and young grandchildren without any income or support.
The lucky children find their place in orphanages that are safe and provide them with food, shelter, and education. Sadly, not all orphanages are ethical and also exploit the innocence of these children for their own financial gain.
At Pendo, our aim is to seek out the orphanages and families who are doing their utmost to keep these children safe and we want to support them because education is what’s most important to the future of these kids.
Once these children reach the age where they can be independent, we can offer support through mentorship to help them with ideas to start up their own business or encourage them to continue their post secondary education.
